Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Vodder manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a therapeutic manual technique using gentle skin-stretch to move lymph. It is intended to stimulate the lymphatic system, reduce swelling (lymphedema), and move cellular wastes (proteins) to support tissue health.
MLD uses light, rhythmic, and sweeping motions—without oil—to guide excess fluid toward lymph nodes. A session starts with diaphragmatic breathing and “clearing” the neck/collarbone area before treating affected limbs.
Key Aspects of Manual Lymphatic Drainage:
Purpose: Primarily treats lymphedema, reduces bruising, and speeds up healing by enhancing lymph flow.
Technique: Uses very light pressure to stretch the skin, as deep pressure can block fluid movement.
Process:
Preparation: Begin with deep breathing to activate the lymphatic system.
Direction: Your therapist will move fluid toward lymph nodes using primary or secondary drainage pathways- depending whether your lymphatic system is intact or has lymph nodes removed.
Repetition: Repeat strokes 10–15 times per area.
Other techniques: stretching, fascial release, visceral manipulation, craniosacral therapy and other manual techniques may be used as indicated.
Common Areas Treated:
Face, Head, and Neck: Light strokes from the center outward to the neck.
Arms: Starting at the armpit and moving down to the hand, then back up.
Legs: Working from the groin down to the foot, then back up to the lymph nodes.
Trunk/Body: Moving fluid towards the armpits or groin.
Testimonials
“When I first went to Amanda, I had this aweful cording after my breast cancer radiation. It was making my arm sore and my armpit felt so tight and heavy.
It’s been almost a year now. We started with treatment and now she helps me keep things in check with maintenance. It was immediately effective and gave me huge relief. Plus, she taught me exercises to do at home. She’s the one who introduced me to my compression bra and arm sleeve that I use when flying. I’d recommend her to anyone who needs specialized, compassionate lymphatic help”.
“I saw Amanda for a lymphatic massage and had a wonderful experience. She’s extremely knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable throughout. She was also really helpful in guiding me toward better compression options for my recovery. I’m very glad she’s part of my recovery journey”.
“Amanda is amazing! Last summer I had a full lower body lift with 360 liposuction and BBL after major weight loss. She was there to help me during most of my recovery with lymphatic drainage massages that I desperately needed. She also helped me with pre and post op with my second surgery. If you are about to or have already gotten some sort of cosmetic surgery, I would highly recommend it”.
